Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
DBT is designed to help individuals who experience intense emotions and struggle with emotional regulation. The term "dialectical" refers to the process of finding a balance between opposing forces, such as acceptance and change. DBT involves both individual therapy sessions and group skills training. The therapy focuses on teaching four key skills.
Mindfulness
Being present in the moment without judgment.
Distress Tolerance
Managing and coping with intense emotions without engaging in harmful behaviours.
Emotional Regulation
Learning to identify and manage intense emotions.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Improving communication skills & building healthier relationships.
DBT is particularly effective for treating conditions such as mood or personality disorders, self-harm, suicidal behaviour, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
