Play Therapy
Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play to help children, youth and older persons express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a safe and nurturing environment. Through play, children, youth or older persons can communicate in a way that is natural and comfortable for them, allowing therapists to gain valuable insights into their inner world and address emotional and behavioural challenges effectively.

Effectiveness
Play therapy has proven effective in supporting children with Autism, intellectual disability, developmental delay, hearing impairment, psychosocial disability, vision impairment, and other conditions. Research shows that play therapy can address a range of needs and challenges faced by children, such as overall functioning, emotional difficulties, self-concept, social-emotional skills, medical conditions, internalising behaviours like anxiety or depression, externalising behaviours like aggression, disruptive behaviours or self-control, academic progress, trauma, PTSD, and other difficulties.
Support
Play therapists support children and youth with physical or intellectual disabilities by gaining a better understanding of their unique physical, developmental, and emotional challenges and lived experiences. They help improve quality of life by fostering independence, coping skills, and language and communication abilities. This enables children to respond to life's challenges with greater resilience, self-confidence, choice, and control.
Therapists actively participate in educational settings, ensuring access to responsive and informed pre-schools and schools through evidence-based therapeutic recommendations and curriculum adjustments. They work in partnership with the families of children with disabilities to enhance understanding of their child's unique profile, development, and support needs, thereby increasing the families' capacity to meet those needs over time.
